Issues of interest:\r\n- Road traffic controls\r\n- Road traffic problems (potholes, etc.)\r\n- Fuel efficiency\r\nA bug tracking system (BTS) for city work is a concept I've considered.\r\nCitizens could then file \"bugs\" and various departments could manage\r\nthem. In the absence of the willingness of employees, volunteers could\r\ndo the work.\r\n\r\n- Logistics of the transport of goods (could be more efficient)\r\nLots of empty trucks and train cars travel around on a regular basis.\r\nEncouraging the use of local goods can decrease pollution, improve local\r\neconomies, make regions independent, and increase the quality of goods.\r\nLocal food and other perishables are generally in better condition if\r\nthey have to spend less time travelling.\r\nMargins on goods from chain stores might be higher than the cost benefit\r\nthey gain through Economies of Scale.\r\n- Regulation of household cleaners\r\nIn workplaces the Workplace Hazardis Material Information System (WHMIS)\r\nrequires that material data sheets be available for each cleaner or\r\nhazardis material. On the sheet is a list of chemical ingredients, their\r\nhazards, symptoms of hazards, and first aid.\r\n- Airline regulations\r\nOn PBS I saw an episode of NOVA about an investigation into an airline\r\ncrash (Swiss Air 111?). In it they said that there were some\r\nrecommendations for industry regulations that were never implemented.\r\nSome were as simple as requiring smoke detectors.\r\n- Deregulating travel\r\nMost airports say to arrive an hour early. While a large part of the\r\ndelay is due to the airlines, security delays are long. Security at\r\nairports is a good idea, but the methods, purposes and other aspects\r\nneed to be evaluated. Not allowing a nail file through, but having other\r\nsuch things for sale on the other side doesn't make much sense. Even if\r\nthe area past security were to be restricted, one should consider the\r\npeople sped through (e.g. workers and frequent travellers). Also other\r\nitems should be considered including the same kind of items as a prison\r\ndoes (e.g. anything that can be made into a \"shiv\"). Even this much\r\nrestriction won't keep all possibilities of malicious intent \"in check\" as\r\nemployees in the industry must have access to dangerous things\r\nincluding equipment for maintenance, fuelling, cargo handling, and the\r\nair planes themselves must be kept available. As Bruce Schnider has said,\r\nbetter security would be people trained to look for suspicious activity.\r\n- Preventing insecure national ID cards\r\nBruce Schnider probably has a good number of articles talking about how\r\ngetting someone's ID doesn't prove that they're a criminal or not.
